“It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.”
― Anthony Robbins
I am constantly asked about the secret of how I stay in shape year in and year out. There must be a magic pill, a special exercise or piece of equipment that I own. Perhaps a magic potion or elixir that must exist for those individuals who are successful whether in the realm of health, fitness or in the workplace.
There is nothing truly sexy about the secret of my success. As consistency to some, is boring.
It’s about showing up on a daily basis and doing what you know is necessary to achieve success.
The most successful workout programs combine six solid workouts of a variety of exercises, that combine solid nutrition over a period of months.
Oh, and by the way, you must actually show up for those six days, put the work in and eat healthy whole foods. Do this day in and day out for weeks, months, years… and now you have found the key.
You can take a look at Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers. Which theorizes that in order to achieve expert status at a certain discipline you need to put in 10,000 hours.
Simply put the more time you put into a discipline the better you get.
When I first started P90X five years ago the furthest thing from my mind was anything past the next workout. I had a hard time getting through one workout never mind looking past the 90 days that encompassed the program. I had a hard time eliminating the junk food that made up my diet but steadily made strides.
A funny thing though happened along the way. I actually looked forward to the next workout, needed the next workout and embraced the next workout. I ate healthier as my body craved the nutrition.
One Round of P90X turned into two, which turned into three and then other workout programs were sought out.
I recently logged in my 1,700 workout and while all of them may not have been fantastically executed, I showed up for each one of them on a consistent basis.
Consistency is the key to your success. Whether trying to reach your goals fitness or health wise, business or in your everyday relationships. Show up everyday and while it may sound boring, it is your key to success.
Perhaps the greatest bonus to the workout programs are that in 30, 60 or 90 days you can achieve the results you are striving for.
In order to sustain your fitness efforts past the initial program you will need to bring the outlined approach above on a daily basis.
