Leave Your Ego At The Door!

It’s easy, when doing a program like P90X or Body Beast that rely on dumbbells and weights, to get caught up in the numbers, to convince yourself that you need to lift heavier each and every workout, to start getting so psyched by how much weight you’re pushing that you’re actually not doing yourself any good, and might, in fact, be missing out on the point of the workout all together.

I know, because, despite having been using Beach Body workouts for years with great results:  P90X, Insanity, Rev Abs, Asylum, P90X 2, and now Body Beast, I still found myself doing it.  Ego and competitiveness kicked in once again, until my Team Beachbody coach Mike Nowak helped me to realize my mistake and pulled me back in.

I’m currently in my next to last week of Body Beast’s six week Bulk phase.  For the last couple of weeks of this phase, I upped my weights constantly, often far more than I thought I’d ever be able do.  It felt good to it, and it felt even better to post my results.  But was I keeping good form?  Honestly, at the heaviest weights, my form was good, but definitely not great.  But the ego boost of being able to post that I did eight reps at x number of pounds was more than enough to keep me going heavier and heavier.

But this week, after consulting with Mike, I pulled it back.  I dropped my weights, concentrated on form, and to make sure I was getting everything out of each movement I could, I slowed each rep down a lot:  one count up, a slow five count down on the negative, one second hold and back up.  Was I pushing weights that would impress friends and strangers alike?  Absolutely not.  Was I pushing weights that helped me to get the maximum good out of each and every single rep?  Absolutely.

So leave your ego at the door.  It’s not always all about the numbers.  It’s all about using perfect form, and getting the most out of each and every rep, each and every exercise.
