It’s Holiday Time – Will You Survive Temptations?

Holidays in Minnesota

Holidays in Minnesota!

Once again, it’s that time of year. The time of happiness and joy.  Of peace on earth and giving and good will to men. Of parties, overeating, and way too many opportunities to overindulge.  What’s a person to do?

One could, of course, just stay home and ignore it all.  But there’s no reason to do that.  It’s easy enough to go to all the parties you want and still come home feeling guilt-free and virtuous.  Herewith, a list of tips to help you make your holiday season healthy and bright.

1.  Never go to a party hungry.  Have a healthy snack before you go along with a very large glass of water.  You’ll be less likely to overeat and make unhealthy choices if you do.

2.  Make smart food choices.  No one says you have to eat everything, or eat more than you usually do.  Load your plate with lean protein and vegetables, and only then, take a spoon or two of one of two of the things you know you shouldn’t be eating, but can’t resist.  As long as you allow yourself to indulge a bit, and don’t deprive yourself completely, you should be good to go.

3.  Same holds true for desserts.  Use a small plate, and just take a small slice of one or two of the things you like the most.  Again, don’t deprive yourself (you’ve EARNED a treat from all your workouts!) but don’t overindulge either – it’s all about balance.

4.  And speaking of balance, if you know you’re going to be at a holiday party in the evening (or an office party at lunch), make sure you eat extra clean the rest of the day – again, it’s all about balance.

5.  What to drink?  SKIP THE EGGNOG!  White wine is good (maybe even mixed with a little club soda – how good is the wine at that party going to be anyway?) red wine is even better.  Hard alcohol drinker?  Your safest bet is vodka and soda with a squeeze of lemon.  And it’s always a smart move to have a glass of water between “drinks.”

That should be enough to help you enjoy the holiday without regretting it after the 1st of the year.  Any questions?  Leave them in the comments section below…they’ll be answered ASAP.

And happy holidays!
